Minnesotans Playing D1 - September

We're a few weeks into the D1 season and there are Minnesotans making a difference across the country. We'll recap some impact players and update our stat tracking for all of the D1 players we're keeping an eye on. Some readers clearly care about submitting new names because we've added at least 30 since our last post. Thank you for helping us spotlight these players!

One standout has been Ansley Atkinson, who stars at Creighton. Ansley was nice enough to join us to talk about her growth in the game, her experience at Creighton, and her desire to play professionally in the future. Check out her interview if you haven't yet!

Impact Players

Ansley Atkinson-Creighton
Ansley delivered a crucial assist as Creighton beat NDSU to keep a 4 game shutout streak alive. In their second match of the weekend, Atkinson then delivered 2 more assists, which brings her total to 9 on the season. The Creighton record for assists in a season is 12. I think a gambler would take that as an easy money bet. Perhaps this is an Equal Time bump???

Delaney Goertzen-Drake
Delaney has been a rock in the back for the Bulldogs, playing 677 minutes in 8 games. This past week though, she added a free-kick assist as Drake upset #15 Memphis. Drake is now 4-3-1 on the season with some great momentum moving towards conference play. Check out Delaney's 5 Minnesotan teammates below.

Ellie Schneider-NDSU
Ellie is another defensive stalwart who plays for NDSU. The Minnetonka native has played every single minute of the Bison season, including overtime. NDSU has had a tough start to the season, but recent results show that a turnaround is possible, with a draw vs. Wyoming and an acceptable 2-0 loss at Creighton. They wrap up non conference play at Marquette on Friday before a two week break before Summit League Conference play. By the way, NDSU could easily be called Team Minnesota, as they feature more Minnesotans than any other D1 team. 16 players hail from the Gopher State.

Lauren Heinsch-Northern Iowa
Northern Iowa is currently 2-5-1, but that doesn't mean they don't score goals. Lauren Heinsch, a Mahtomedi High School alum, has 5 goals and 2 assists in 8 games, hitting doubles against Viterbo and St. Ambrose. Before starring at UNI, Lauren was an All State performer in high school and she is joined by for other Minnesotans as you can see in our recap below.

Maya Hansen-SDSU
Maya is one of 6 Minnesotans on this Jackrabbit squad and she is in form with 7 goals and 2 assists in 8 games! It should probably come as no surprise, given her 2019 Summit League Player of the Year and 2020-21 All Summit League First Team awards. South Dakota State is looking strong at 7-1, and I'm sure they believe they can take the Summit League title this year.

Thanks for this list, it’s incredible to see. I’m sorry if I missed another post as I’m new but just Wondering why the Minnesota players for the University of St. Thomas and the gophers aren’t on this list? Might be fun to see the full list including Minnesotans playing here. Thanks.

Good point, Steve. Mark and I were just messaging about how to do maybe a combined Best 11 for all DI MNs, including St Thomas and UMN players. To be honest, the original idea was that UST and UMN already get their own entire beats and so the teams and their players don't really need *more* coverage but it's not a crazy idea to try and add them in.
