2023 MN Iron Woman: Maddie Ishaug - Wisconsin

In College Soccer's condensed season with unique substitution rules, it is not commonplace to average 90 minutes a game, like you may see with more defensive positioned pros. In fact, of the 120+ D1 Minnesotans, only one averaged 90 minutes a game: Maddie Ishaug of Wisconsin. 17 other players started every single game for their team as highlighted below, but just Ishaug hit the impressive 90 per game mark thanks to an overtime match with Rutgers filling the few substitution moments she had throughout the season. The Junior from Eden Prairie has played for MN Thunder and Slavo SC in Minnesota and helped lead Wisconsin to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament with a win over UW Milwaukee. Below are the 18 Minnesota players who started every game their team played (in team alphabetical order), with Brisha Musungu and Clara Broecker closest to Maddie Ishaug's total

2023 MN Goal Champ: Kaitlyn Macbean - Penn State

MacBean spent her first two College seasons injured with an ACL injury, and then had to earn her place in a historically deep and successful Penn State squad. She found her place in the Nittany Lions offense and hit her stride at the right time with 4 goals and 4 assists in 4 NCAA Tournament games. That performance earns her the top goal scoring spot for D1 Minnesotans in 2023. Behind MacBean you see the depth in attackers we have in different conferences, with Lauren Heinsh at UNI, Jessie Hunt and Lauren Ahles at Northeastern and Sophia Boman and Mariah Nguyen at MN and St Thomas. Maya Hansen had 5 goals in 7 games before a season ending injury, so at least one contender was cut out early from a likely banner year at South Dakota State.

2023 MN D1 Goal Leaders

Penn State - Kaitlyn MacBean - 10 goals, 6 assists
UNI -
Olivia Knoepfle - 9 goals, 6 assists

2023 MN Assist Champ: Jessie Hunt - Northeastern

After the 2021 Season, Jessie Hunt had been a contributor at Wisconsin but wanted more. She felt she had a bigger role to play and sought a team to showcase that. Consider her showcased. 38 games, 38 starts at Northeastern, with 30(!) goal contributions to speak of, ranking in the top 10 of the NCAA in assists both years, and setting program records in the mean time. Hunt has been the queen of dropping dimes the last two years, and we'll have to see who takes her place next year. MacBean had plenty of assists to show in her Junior year, Sophia Boman had fine production in a less than proficient Gopher attach, and Angela Gutierrez had a very impressive first year at Drake.

2023 MN D1 Assist Leaders

Northeastern - Jessie Hunt - 6 goals, 10 assists (10th in NCAA) 2 time all CAA
Penn State - Kaitlyn MacBean - 10 goals, 6 assists
UNI - UNI -
Olivia Knoepfle - 9 goals, 6 assists
Drake - Angela Gutierrez - 6 goals, 5 assists

2023 Standout MN Keeper: Clare Gagne - Brown

When Clare Gagne went to Brown, she was joining a squad that perennially contends for the Ivy League title and a run into the NCAA Tournament. As a keeper, that means more patience than most positions. Gagne got a few cameos in her Sophmore year, and by last year, she was a factor in net, going 5-1-1 in 10 games with a solid .83 GAA. This year, the job was Gagne's from the jump. In a full time role, she dropped her goals against to .72 a game and backstopped a nationally ranked squad throughout the year. In a season with 3 other solid veteran keepers showing out, the nod goes to the consistency and team success of Clare Gagne and Brown.

NCAA Tournament Runs

Coming into the 2023 NCAA Tournament, it wouldn't have been incredibly difficult to predict the Final Four with Florida State, Clemson, Stanford and BYU (3 #1 seeds btw), but a few Minnesotans made it to the doorstep of that final weekend, and plenty more had at least a taste of victory in the big dance.
