We're halfway through the Conference season and we've got fresh Minnesotans to highlight. Sick of our constant goal and assist crushes, the keepers decided to wake us up. Payton Cahill made her first ever College start and dispatched #22 Virginia, following it up with a win over Virginia Tech. Meanwhile Clare Gagne is leading a Brown defense that just beat Harvard and Yale and look to make a run at the Ivy League. In the Summit League, South Dakota State beat all of its Dakota rivals, while South Dakota got the edge on UND on two assists from Minnesotans Brooklyn Bordson and Izzy Quintaville. We again have to spotlight the squad of Minnesotans pacing Northern Iowa to a potential Missouri Valley postseason run, and we'll dig into which players have played the most minutes as iron women for their teams. Check out games to watch the next few weeks and dig into the stats for the 120+ Division 1 players from Minnesota! Clare Gagne beats Harvard and Yale, adds #13 Princeton for good measureLast year Brown won the Ivy League by just edging Harvard, and when they played in the NCAA Tournament they made it count, beating #24 Rutgers before a tough PK loss to UC Irvine in the second round. Orono native Clare Gagne played in 10 games last year, but didn't get to play in the NCAA's. Gagne is on track to lead Brown to their 4th (!) Ivy league title in a row, backstopping the squad to a 7-1-2 record (3-0 in Ivy) so far. This season Brown beat Harvard and Yale away, and in between beat the #13 team in the nation, Princeton to start the Ivy season undefeated. Gagne and the Brown Defense have only given up 4 goals all year and face Penn this weekend at 7pm, Saturday Oct 7th, before traveling to Columbia next weekend. Payton Cahill makes first College start, beats #22 Virginia and Virginia Tech as Wake Forest climbs to #17
How would you envision your college debut going? Payton Cahill didn't play any games last year. The year before that, as a highly touted recruit, she redshirted to preserve eligibility on a stacked Wake team. You could forgive the fans of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Cavaliers if they didn't notice her extended break from competitive games. Cahill stepped in for a huge ACC matchup at #22 Virginia Tech and held the defense down for a 2-0 win. She followed it up with another 2-0 win over Virginia. Wake travels to Syracuse and Pitt this weekend before a HUGE game at Maddie Dahlien and North Carolina on October 13th.
South Dakota State sweep all Dakota rivals, face Denver in big Summit matchup
(highlights:
When we ask players from UND, USD or NDSU who they want to beat most, you don't even have to finish the question before they say "South Dakota State!". The Jacks come into these games as a favorite but the nature of the rivalries means these games won't often be easy. South Dakota made the Jacks work for it in Vermillion, holding South Dakota State to a close 1-0 win. NDSU almost one upped the Yotes by going to Brookings and stealing points from the favorites, also just missing out with a 1-0 loss. By the 3rd Dakota rivalry game in a row, SDSU got their offense moving and beat UND 3-0 in the GOALD Game. SDSU goes to Denver this Thursday, October 8 at 8pm in a BIG matchup with the perennial Summit contenders. Of note, SDSU has been playing with Maya Hansen for the past few games. If she comes back, the goals should start to come more frequently.
South Dakota beat rivals UND off assists from Brooklyn Bordson and Izzy QuintavalleSouth Dakota just missed out on the Summit League Tournament last season after making it the past few years, and two Minnesotans look ready to help rectify that this year. When they missed the 2022 postseason, it was rivals North Dakota who got in instead, on some deep tie breakers. Revenge came back around early this fall and the Coyotes took advantage last thursday. With 1-0 lead in the 2nd half, Brooklyn Bordson initatied a play from the right side, playing in Izzy Quintavalle who slipped the ball to Janaina Zanin for the 2nd goal. South Dakota take a 2-1 Summit League Record (and 6-3-3 overall) to Omaha this Thursday, Oct 5 and then Denver on Sunday the 8th. South Dakota faces NDSU on Sunday, Oct 15 in a game certain to affect playoff positions going to the end of the year. Which Minnesotans play the most in D1 Soccer? (Midseason Minutes Awards)
Tracking 120+ Minnesotans can make it hard to appreciate all of the types of players we make in this great state. Without being able to watch all of the fine defenders and non goal producing players, we lean on what we can. Today we highlight the Iron Women of Minnesota soccer, the players who coaches depend on most frequently to stay on the pitch and hold it down for their team. Some of these players do produce goals, like Sophia Boman from Minnesota (5g, 3a), Clara Broecker of Milwaukee (3g,2a), but many of these standouts are defenders, keepers and working midfielders. 12 players make the cut as those who play over 80 minutes a game, and 2 others make the list as first years who play over 70(!) minutes a game. We are splitting hairs to rank folks because the numbers are so tight, but we've prioritized minutes per game as you can only play the games in front of you. With that in mind, Emmy Ellington takes the midseason top prize as she only missed 1 minute so far all year!
