There are only a few weeks left in the Conference season for Division 1 Soccer. The window for postseason births is becoming narrower as teams play themselves in or out of contention. South Dakota State comes into the weekend unbeaten, but faces a tough Summit League upstart in St Thomas. Northeastern took a bite out of Northeast Conference foes with help from Jessie Hunt and Lauren Ahles. Lily Gilbertson (Northwestern) and Maddie Dahlien (UNC) are playing for top 10 teams, and Kassandra Shoen bagged a Hat Trick for Alabama State

South Dakota State Unbeaten after 12, huge game at St Thomas awaits

It's a good thing when you're undefeated and your biggest problem is drawing 5 of 12. South Dakota State has been resilient on defense to say the least, they're 8th in the nation in Goals Against Average with just .417 goals given up each game. Jocelyn Tanner of Ham Lake is half of a pure goalkeeper duo for the Jacks. Each keeper starts half of the game and plays the other half, and you'd have to say it works fine. Tanner is 3rd in the Nation in Goals Against Average with a microscopic .333 goal allowed each game. If SDSU gets their scoring going, the Summit League will be in trouble.

South Dakota State travel to St Thomas on Friday, October 7 for a big matchup between a SDSU team hungry for wins and a St Thomas team that is taking a step up this year. The game kicks off at 4pm for those in the Twin Cities metro, or you can stream via thesummitleague.org

Hunt and Ahles pace Northeastern to a double

Northeastern didn't get the start to the Northeast Conference schedule, taking a draw and loss from their opening slate. Last weekend at home in Brookline, Mass, the Huskies too all 6 points, partly due to their pair of Minnesotans Jessie Hunt and Lauren Ahles. In their 3-0 win over Stony Brook, Jessie Hunt served up a corner kick goal for Megan Putvinski, In a tight 2-1 win over Hofstra, Ahles assisted on the opener, while Jessie Hunt scored a Penalty to seal the 2-1 win. Ahles assist was her first college point, while Hunt continued her offensive performance with 1 goal and 6 assists on the year now.

Lily Gilberson making moves for #6 Northwestern

Northwestern are having a HUGE year, climbing up to #6 in the latest Coaches Poll. Lily Gilbertson is showing out as a rare Minnesotan on a top 10 team. In the last 5 games Northwestern has been paced by Gilberson setting up 3 goals, and adding a huge goal away at Minnesota to score a close win. The Senior Midfielder from Maple Grove has already played 58 games for Northwestern and will look to seal her place in history with a postseason run this year.

Dahlien continues to play a roll for #5 UNC

We've mentioned Maddie Dahlien before, but she's doing something that not many Minnestoan players are doing, which is stepping into a true blue blood program and contributing right away as a freshman. She has 242 minutes this year over 12 games, with 25+ in her last 3 games. On a deep team that has more history than any Women's College team, it's clear Coach Anson Dorrance trusts this young player with continued minutes. Maybe we shouldn't be surprised about Maddie's success after all. Dahlien was the 2021 Star Tribune Athlete of the Year for her Soccer (37 goals and 14 assists in her Senior Season) and Track (State Champ in the 100, 200, and 400 as a Junior!).

Shoen hits a hat trick for Alabama State

Kassandra Shoen started off her Junior year just fine, scoring 2 goals in 450 minutes. Last weekend she upped the ante a bit, bagging a hat trick at Prairie View to seal their first Conference win. Shoen is a 3 year starter for Alabama State and is now up to 10 goals and 3 assists in 41 career games. The Hornets take on Grambling State at their Homecoming this Friday, October 7 and host Arkansas Pine Bluff on Sunday, October 9.

D1 Minnesotans: Haakenson leads Michigan, Marquette's Trio, FAU's Duo, and North Dakota State goes into the Summit League winning

For most college teams in the country, their conference season starts now. For all but the very elite, their only chance at a NCAA Tournament birth is by doing work in the Conference and taking momentum into their postseason. The last two weeks there were Minnesotans making waves from coast to great lakes coast. The FAU Owls are flying with the help of Mia Hennes and Hailey Landrus, Marquette are bolstered by Katie Koker, Chloe Olson and Abby Ruhland, and Meredith Haakenson stands out as a Super Senior at Michigan. Look at how NDSU are taking a step up in '22 and catch up on all of the player stats from Minnesotans playing D1.

FAU buoyed by Mia Hennes and Hailey Landrus

FAU is off to a solid start to year, a 5-3-2 record including scoring a non conference win over Kansas and winning their first C-USA game against North Texas away. 2 Minnesotans have played big roles for FAU, Mia Sennes and Hailey Landrus (pictured below in the player tracker). Sennes has a goal and 400 minutes in 9 games, while Landrus has 3 assists and 752 minutes in 10 games. Having finished last year 6-7-5, the Owls look to make a step up this year and run into the Conference USA Tournament. Look for their MN Duo to continue playing a role.

Marquette's MN Trio

Marquette has started the year basically beating who you'd expect them to beat, taking a 4-3-1 record into Big East play. Tough non conference matchups with Notre Dame and Minnesota away were the only games that got a bit away from the Golden Eagles. They start Big East Conference play this week at Depaul (Sept 22) and Butler (Sept 25) and a trio of Minnesotans are playing a part. Lead by Gopher transfer Katie Koker, who's played 567 minutes in 8 starts, she's joined by Keeper Chloe Olson and Freshman Forward Abby Ruhland. Stream all of their games via their website!

Meredith Haakenson leads Michigan

Michigan is coming off of a Final Four season and return 3 grad players along with 8 seniors. Their expectations are most definitely high for this year. One of the grad players is Maple Grove's Meredith Haakenson, who's picked up where she left off last year, with a little more offensive juice. She's got 3 goals and 5 assists in 639 minutes, or a goal/assist every 79 minutes -- Super Senior production. Haakenson had an assist on the game saving goal against #19 Colorado and continues to anchor the midfield for the Wolverines. Michigan plays Ohio St (Sept 22) and Nebraska (Sept 25) on BTN+ before a big away matchup at Minnesota on September 27. That game is at 7pm on big BTN, but get out to ELR if you're in the Twin Cities, it should be a huge game for both teams.

NDSU start Summit play with winning Non Conference

The Bison finished last year with 3 wins. Rip that goal off the bulletin board because they're already 4-3-3 this year. You could see reasons for optimism for the year with returning depth and balanced production from attackers. So far NDSU has shown a different level of competitiveness this year, highlighted by wins over Drake, UW Green Bay, Utah Tech and Chicago State. There are too many Minnesotans to name here but look at the incredible balanced production on the offensive end down in the player tracker. You can watch NDSU start their Summit League season at Denver and Omaha this weekend. All Summit League games are streamed from the team websites!

St Thomas "wins" non conference slate, moves into Summit play confident
St Thomas didn't pad their second ever D1 non conference slate, scoring wins against Drake and Northern Iowa, and taking a tough 2-1 loss to Marquette. It's clear the Tommies are ready to move up in the Summit League and they start with 2 at home. St Thomas is a great place to catch a fall game, take early happy hour on Friday
